Healthy Ecosystem and Marine Life

In Te Ngahere we’ve been learning about Marine Life and Healthy Ecosystem. An Healthy ecosystem is made up of two parts, abiotic and biotic. Abiotic is non-living things like sand, rock and water. Biotic is living things there are 3 different biotics: Producer, Consumers and Decomposers. Producer are the plant that use photosynthesis to produce their own food, Consumers are animal that eat producer or animals, Decomposer are the animal that break down the dead matter. We also have been learning about different marine areas such as Coast, Estuaries, Fiords. In New Zealand there are two different coasts and they are rock cliffs and sandy beaches. Estuaries are a place on the coast where freshwater and seawater mix with a big mud flat when the tide goes out. Fiord is a long narrow inlet of sea. Fiord are made from freshwater above seawater. Rain water runs down the rock cliffs, absorbing tannins from plants and that makes fresh water brown. The freshwater lays above the seawater, it blocks the sunlight and that makes the seawater dark. I enjoined to learn different things about marine life and marine areas.

Virtual Reality

In Te Ngahere we’ve been learning how to keep our ocean healthy by watching VR videos with Thomas and Grace from Blake VR. The reasoned why their company is named Blake is because their company was named after Sir Peter Blake, the reason why they’re named after Sir Peter Blake was because he was in two American cup winning teams and he has traveled around the world in a race 5 times but unfortunately he died from a gunshot by a pirate. We learned that healthy oceans have seaweed and big fishes, also there are sea sponges and shell creatures to clean the seawater and they are called filter feeders. Unhealthy oceans have no seaweed and no big fish there are only small fishes, the reason it’s caused unhealthy oceans might be because two reasons, first reason might be overfishing because if we catch all the fish then the food chain will not work so the kina will eat all of the seaweed and then it will be unhealthy. The second reason was because pollution which is made of wastes, plastic and other unhealthy stuff. Also we have talked about how to solve those problem and the solution we got that everyone only can catch 3 fishes and we could get some lifeguard and cameras to check that they only catches 3 fish, for pollution we thought that if we use less plastic then we could have less pollution. We also learned that in protected areas we can’t to do 3 things and the first thing was that we can’t feed the fish in protected areas because if we always feed them then they might forget how to hunt, also we can’t go fishing because we are in the protected area and we can’t take shells and other stuff from the protected areas. My favorite part from the VR Video was to watched those wonderful fishes from the protected area.

Polynesian panthers

In Te Ngahere we’ve been learning about the Polynesian Panthers. For the Polynesian Panthers we had to read the text and we had to talk about what strategy we should use for the question and also we had to talk about the answers. We have learned that Polynesian Panthers were formed in 1971 and the reason that they were formed was because there was a lot of prejudice and racism  they wanted to stop it. The Polynesian Panthers were against the government who were conducting the dawn raids against the Pacific Islanders. We also have to talk about what some important words mean, for example:

Racism: Unfair treatment to someone or somebody.

Prejudice: Unreasonable dislike of someone because of their skin color.

Economy: 3 main things, buy stuff, make stuff, sell stuff.

If I did it again I would use more detail to answer my question.

Do you know anything about Polynesian panthers?

Show Not Tell

In Te Ngahere we’ve been learning a new writing skill named show not tell. For show not tell we have to change tells into shows.
Example: tell-He is mad, show-He scrunched up his eyebrow, he clung up his first, He looked at me, he looked at me like a giant tiger. He left up his hand and opened his first and he pushed me away from him.

Also we had to write a diary entry and then we could choose a part from diary entry and then you have to found a body to help you to film a video of take a photo then you need to use the app the remove the background and the video will became a no background GIF.

Crazy hat day

In Paihia School we had a crazy hat day. For the crazy hat day we had to make our own crazy hat, most people just made a hat out of paper and some people just bought a hat and they added crazy things to the hat. I made 2 hats and stacked them on top of each other. The first hat that I made is a top hat with some little paper stars that I made. For my second hat I made a chinese old time hat with paper, also I drew some old Chinese pictures on the side. The reason we had a crazy hat day was because we haven’t seen another class for a long time, also there is another reason was because we won’t have any fun things. We were so happy and excited to have the WHOLE school together for the first time this year. I think Whaea Becks hat was the best hat.

Stem and Leaf graph

Stem and Leaf graph
In Te Ngahere we’ve been learning about Stem and Leaf graphs. For the Stem and Leaf graph we had two different graphs. The first one we had was about the All Black’s height. For the task we had to figure out how the heights were shown on the graph. We figured out that Stem was hundreds and tens and the leaf was the ones. For example if an All Black was 173cm 17 would be in the stem part and 3 would be a leaf. Each leaf in the graph represented one all black. I tried my best to answer all of the question right.
Have you made a Stem and Leaf graph before?

Dominoes Steam challenge

In Te Ngahere last week we had another steam challenge, we have to use the dominoes effect to create a train line. First we have to separate into groups of 2 or 3, in my team I had Kova and Indie. For the challenge we had to make a plan of what we are going to use, we could use most of the stuff in the class and my team chose the books, cards, card boxes and rubber band (to tie the cards together). In my team we put the heaviest at the back and the lightest on the front. The reason why we put the the heaviest in the back was because if we put the light one in the front then they can’t push the heavy ones and we have to push hard so the energy can be passed on. We enjoyed to see how our Dominoes work. The most challenging part of the steam challenge was to keep the books and the cards standing still. We had our creation fall down a few times by accident and we were pretty sad but that meant it worked. I did well to give my plan out to my group and setting up our Dominoes.
Have you ever done a long Dominoes before?

Treasure Hunt

This week at Paihia School in Te Ngahere we had a treasure hunt. For the treasure hunt we were put in different colored groups, I was in the group that was colored whero(red). The reason that we were in different color groups was because there are too many children in our classroom and the teachers separated us into different color groups because of the different color clues. For the treasure hunt we got a piece of paper for the start that had a clue on it and we had to use the information to find the next clue. It was too hard with the last clue because in the last clue we have to solve out what is the Maori word for the “lonely bird” and Whaea Becks actually told my group a clue and we solved the problem and the answer was manu (bird). I had a lot of fun and we were very excited to find the treasure and also we got our faces painted before the treasure hunt started and I enjoyed eating my chocolate. I think I did well by helping my group to solve the problem.
Have you been into a treasure hunt before?
If you did then what was your prize if you won one?

Math problem about Class Trip

In Te Ngahere we’ve been learning a new math problem about class trips. In the class trip problem we have to separate into groups and in my group I had 3 people with me and they are named Charlize, Alana and Ashlyn. For the class trip problem we have to cut out all the rectangles and put them into time/date and people/money, also there are things that you can’t bring and things that you need to bring. Then we needed to work out the departure time from school and the time you arrive back at school and we also had to solve out all the problems.
I did well to solve out how much it is going to cost for the trip.
Have you learned anything about trips yet?

Thank you card

In Te Ngahere this week we have to make a thank you card to Rotary Members, the reason why we had to make one was because that they help us to fix the bridge and we can watch eels safely. For the card first we had to get a piece of paper and draw a picture on it and then we had to use watercolor to paint it and we had to write a thank you message on another piece of paper and glue that onto a piece of paper and then glue our painting onto the front of our paper. I did well on my cursive writing for my message. Have you done a thank you card before?
